Many people have loose skin that they would love to be rid of, but aren’t sold on the idea of invasive surgical procedures, such as having a face lift or tummy tuck. If you want to tighten loose skin you are tired of looking at in the mirror, you could check into some of the non-invasive skin tightening treatments now available. You might be surprised at how many high tech, non-invasive procedures there are to choose from.
Thermage is a non-invasive treatment that uses RF (radio frequency) technology. This procedure safely heats the deep layers of your skin, which stimulates the formation of new collagen. Your surface skin stays cool while the under layers are heated – sort of like microwave cooking!
Another procedure, Titan skin tightening, also works by heating the deep layers of your skin, but it uses laser technology. It is said to be an improvement over RF since it heats more evenly.
ReFirme is another non-surgical procedure that stimulates the skin with elōs technology, a blend of RF and either light or laser.
Both Thermage and ReFirme are used on the face and body, whereas Titan is generally only used on the face. Thermage and Titan treatments involve some discomfort so are usually administered with general anesthesia. ReFirme claims to be virtually painless. All three treatments claim to be safe and, going by some of the before and after photos we’ve seen, look to be extremely effective.
Aluma is a non-surgical eyelift that uses bipolar frequency energy that is similar to laser treatments, except that it is safe to use around the eye. (Lasers can’t be used around the eye for cosmetic purposes since they could damage your retina.)
Doctors recommend you wait approximately a year after losing weight or giving birth before having any major skin tightening treatment. Your skin will continue to conform to your new body, especially if you are eating healthy food and exercising. Everyone is different. There is a hereditary factor as to how elastic your skin is and there are no lifestyle changes you can make to totally overcome your genes.
There are a few downsides to these treatments. They are administered by either a doctor or a licensed aesthetician which makes them pretty expensive, often around $1,000 per treatment. They need to be repeated a few times for optimal results. The results generally last 6 months to a year, then another round of treatment will be required.
How to tighten loose skin is a decision that will depend on many factors – your age, your general health, your budget, and your level of discomfort tolerance. But most importantly, you must be realistic about what your goals are to determine if one of these procedures will be the answer you are looking for.
